It works in conjunction with the drug misoprostol which causes the cervix to soften and initiates uterine contractions, which eventually results in expelling the contents of the uterus.
When to use?
Terminations of pregnancy, postcoital contraception, labour induction following intrauterine foetal death, cervical softening and dilatation prior to surgical termination of pregnancy.
How to use?
Termination of pregnancy (=49 days of gestation) :
600 mg as a single dose followed 2 days later by 400 mcg of misoprostol as single dose.
Postcoital contraception :
600 mg as a single dose within 72 hour of unprotected intercourse.
Termination of pregnancy up to 63 days of gestation:
600 mg as a single dose, followed by 1 mg gemeprost vaginally after 36-48 hour.
Labour induction following intrauterine foetal death :
600 mg/day for 2 days.
Termination of pregnancy (between 13-24 week of gestation) :
600 mg as a single dose given 36-48 hour prior to prostaglandin therapy.
Cervical softening and dilatation prior to surgical termination of pregnancy :
600 mg as a single dose given 36-48 hour prior to the procedure.
May be taken with or without food.
(Avoid grapefruit juice.)

Cases for precaution
Adrenocortical insufficiency, Anemia, Bleeding disorders, Bleeding tendencies, Ectopic pregnancy, Porphyria
Mifepristone600 mg (200 mg may be effective) as a single dose under medical supervision, followed 36-48 hrs. Later bygemeprost1 mg by vagina & observed for at least 3 hours; follow-up visit10-14 days later to verify complete expulsion
